De Standaard – With this flower shop you can earn a house

Daytrading is not more difficult than keeping a flower shop open. ‘What we buy, we then put something more expensive in the shop window. If we have earned enough, we will close the shop. ‘ After a few years you can earn a house with it. But also losses. ‘I have had to sell a house myself to make up for my losses.’

DRIES DE SMET ANTWERP

Rob Wessels buys fifteen derivatives from the German star index DAX with a few mouse clicks. ‘I will immediately put them in the shop window. That does a shopkeeper also when he buys stuff? ‘ A sales order goes out the door. If the index rises 10 points, the derivatives will change owner. Unfortunately the index goes the other way, but you do not hear the 74 year old Rotterdammer grumble. “Delicious. Then we can buy something. ”

Another 15 index derivatives are displayed in his shop. Barely a few minutes later, bell ringing sounds. “Hey, a customer in the store. The indexes have been sold, but now the shelf is empty. ‘ Two purchase orders immediately follow, for when the index plunges 20 or 40 points lower.

Not taxed

If another customer visits his shop, Wessels thinks it is okay. He earned 333.75 euros in just 35 minutes. The remaining purchase orders are canceled and the shop closes. Nothing counts for that amount, because his online broker does not charge transaction costs and the capital gains on derivatives are not taxed.

So Wessels can have an amarette drink on an Antwerp terrace, were it not that four students hang on his lips to be initiated into the wonderful world of daytrading. One of them would like to double her money in a year. ‘Money does not yield anything with the current interest. I saw his advertisement in De Standaard and so I’m here, ‘says the butcher’s wife from West Flanders, who prefers to remain anonymous. She is a somewhat atypical candidate day trader since she is neither man nor retired. She secretly hopes to be able to make day-work her day job.

Daytrading responds to the short-term fluctuations of the stock market. Wessels basic recipe is simple. ‘I do not know whether the stock market indices will rise or fall, but that they will fluctuate throughout the day.’ At the crack of the day – because then the stock exchanges are the most volatile – he will prepare eight purchase orders. Every time a package of securities has been acquired, he immediately places several basic items more expensive in the shop window.

As soon as he has reached his intended daily gain, he makes the books. ‘That is no different than a florist who wants to make 500 euros a profit every day. If he has bought flowers for 500 euros, he closes his shop when there is 1,000 euros in the cash register. ‘ The remaining indices – or flowers – are then liquidated at the market price.

Wessels never buys individual shares, because they are too risky. Only star indexes such as the DAX and the Dow Jones are sold, because a historical statistical analysis shows that at the end of the day they very rarely record more than a few percent higher or lower. Wessels does not pay any harm to his method. Since November 2012 he already earned 54,000 euros. On a capital of 150,000 euros this amounts to an annual yield of almost 30 percent. It takes a few weeks until the students get Wessels method in the fingers. Jack turned dry for three months in a demo version, but on Wednesday, he took the plunge. After three days he already stood at 120 euros profit with his portfolio of 25,000 euros, but after that his losses amounted to 2,000 euros. Where did it go wrong? “I did something in the afternoon, because I also have to pay Rob. ” The course costs 970 euros, but it has to be paid when the candidateday trader makes a profit. “That’s the problem with course participants,” Wessels sighs. ‘I deliver a driver’s license, but that does not mean that they therefore drive wisely. Jack did not have the discipline to stop, while we recommend to place orders on the market only at the stock market opening. ‘ But even at Wessels it does not always run smoothly. Occasionally things go wrong when, at the end of the day, they can only get lost with losing their indexes. Then plan B comes into effect. “You can never take a loss. That’s the dumbest thing you can do, even Warren Buffett says that. ” “That’s the problem with course participants,” Wessels sighs. ” ‘But it does not always go smoothly at Wessels. Occasionally things go wrong when, at the end of the day, they can only get lost with losing their indexes. Then plan B comes into effect. “You can never take a loss. That’s the dumbest thing you can do, even Warren Buffett says that. ” ‘But it does not always go smoothly at Wessels. Occasionally things go wrong when, at the end of the day, they can only get lost with losing their indexes. Then plan B comes into effect. “You can never take a loss. That’s the dumbest thing you can do, even Warren Buffett says that. ”

‘If it rains then the jeweler will not have a customer for a week, but he has to pay his staff. If he had an investor account, he would therefore be at a loss. But that’s why he does not close his store anyway? ”

Daytrading responds to short-term fluctuations of the stock market. © dl Wessels keeps its loss positions, and systematically eliminates the loss until it returns to profit. But his recent trade history shows that it can rain very long and hard. At a certain moment he was saddled with a paper loss of more than 70,000 euros. Was he on his way to bankruptcy? “Well, we have a buffer for that. And market conditions must already be exceptional in order for that buffer to run out. ‘

‘Oh well, I have already had to sell a house to make up for my loss. I’ve also made mistakes and have to eat beans for years, but that’s healthy too. ”

Penalty
Wessels has no diploma and acted in his professional life in real estate. But with the arrival of the internet, the self-mademan threw himself into day trading. He has been organizing courses for more than ten years.

He is not, however, discouraged. In 2010 he received a fine from the Dutch stock exchange watchdog because he acted as an asset manager without a license. “I managed the accounts of a few clients, on their request. In the US you can have such friends and family accounts, apparently not in the Netherlands. It will not happen to me a second time. ”

Occasionally Wessels suffers from his blood pressure, but his doctor advises him not to take daytrading. “He says I can not drink anymore, but that amaretto is so good.”

Somewhat after noon, the daytraining course is ready and Wessels and his fifty years younger business partner Engo Koc can still do a terrace. But to student Jack, that nice weather is not spent. His loss has risen to 2,500 euros by midday. And the most important thing he learned from the course is that he can trade in the afternoon. Because then it is morning in the US. So he quickly returns home. He did not have to sell that house for the time being to make up for his losses.
